What Is Considered a Pediatric Dental Emergency?

As parents, we’re always trying to keep our children safe, from playground tumbles to late-night fevers. But when it comes to dental issues, it can sometimes be hard to tell what’s an emergency and what can wait for a regular appointment. At Just Kids Dental, we specialise in treating young patients and want to help you understand what qualifies as a pediatric dental emergency, what signs to watch for, and how we can support your family when the unexpected happens.

How to Recognise a Pediatric Dental Emergency

A pediatric dental emergency is any oral health issue in a child that requires immediate attention from a dental professional to relieve pain, stop bleeding, prevent infection, or save a tooth. These emergencies can be caused by injury, infection, or underlying dental conditions, and they can happen at any time during school, sports, or even while your child is sleeping.

Common Pediatric Dental Emergencies

Let’s break down the most frequent emergencies we see in our office and what signs to look for:

1. Severe Toothache

If your child is suddenly clutching their mouth, crying, or refusing to eat, it may be more than just a cavity. It could be a sign of an infected or damaged tooth. A persistent or worsening toothache should never be ignored.

What to watch for:

  • Pain that lasts more than a day
  • Swelling in the gums or face
  • Fever or general discomfort
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold

What to do: Call us right away. We may need to examine the tooth to rule out infection or abscess.

2. Knocked-Out Tooth

If your child has had a fall or sports injury and a tooth has been completely knocked out, immediate action is critical, especially if it’s a permanent tooth.

What to do:

  • For a permanent tooth, gently rinse it with water (don’t scrub), and try to place it back in the socket or store it in milk.
  • For a baby tooth, do not reinsert it. Call us for advice on the next steps.

We always recommend wearing a mouthguard during sports to reduce the risk of this injury.

3. Chipped or Broken Tooth

Kids are active, and it’s not uncommon for them to chip or fracture a tooth. While a small chip may not seem urgent, deeper cracks can expose sensitive nerves or lead to infection.

Signs it’s an emergency:

  • Pain when chewing
  • Sensitivity to temperature
  • Visible crack or missing piece
  • Bleeding around the tooth or gumline

We’ll assess the damage and recommend appropriate treatment, which may include smoothing the tooth, bonding, or restoring it with a crown.

4. Swelling or Abscess

Facial swelling, especially if it appears near the jaw or cheek, is usually a sign of infection. An abscessed tooth or infected gum tissue can quickly become serious and even spread to other areas of the body.

Symptoms include:

  • Throbbing pain
  • Swelling in the face or gums
  • Fever
  • A pimple-like bump on the gums with or without pus

This is a true dental emergency and requires immediate treatment. Call us immediately if your child has any of these signs.

5. Object Stuck Between Teeth

While it may sound minor, something as simple as a popcorn kernel or food debris stuck between the teeth can cause swelling, pain, or gum infection if left untreated.

Try gently flossing the area. If that doesn’t help or if your child is in pain, contact our office. Never use sharp objects to try and dislodge it.

6. Bitten Lip, Tongue, or Cheek

Children can sometimes bite their soft tissues while chewing or after dental work when their mouth is still numb. While this often heals on its own, excessive bleeding, swelling, or signs of infection may require emergency care.

Use clean gauze to apply pressure and reduce bleeding. A cold compress can help with swelling. If bleeding doesn’t stop after 10–15 minutes or if the wound looks deep, let us know right away.

When in Doubt, Contact a Professional

We know it can be scary when your child is in pain or something doesn’t look right with their child’s teeth. Even if you’re unsure whether it’s an emergency, it’s better to call and ask. At Just Kids Dental, we’d rather you reach out with questions than risk waiting too long.

Our friendly team will walk you through what steps to take at home and schedule you for an urgent visit if needed. We’re here to support you because your child’s comfort, safety, and long-term dental health are always our priority.

How to Prevent Dental Emergencies

While not all emergencies can be avoided, there are steps we can take to reduce the risk:

  • Use mouthguards: During sports or physical activity, always have your child wear a properly fitted mouthguard.
  • Keep up with dental checkups: Regular cleanings help us spot small issues before they become emergencies.
  • Reinforce good habits: Teach your child to avoid chewing hard items (like ice or hard candy) that can chip teeth.
  • Watch for early signs: Don’t ignore small complaints about tooth sensitivity or gum tenderness. They may be early warning signs.

We believe that prevention is one of the best forms of protection. At every checkup, we provide personalised advice on how to keep your child’s teeth strong and healthy.
